Rebuilding Hope In New Orleans

PCCT Kicks Off New Mission With Habitat for Humanity

PCCT kicked off our new mission initiative with the Morris County Habitat for Humanity Chapter with a work day on April 28 on Garfield Avenue in Victory Gardens, New Jersey.  We learned that Victory Gardens has its origin as a planned community for veterans coming home after World War II.  Our objective was to complete the finish work on a house that was rebuilt by the Habitat teams over the prior 6 months.  Our PCCT Habitat team of 12 workers assembled at 8:30AM to take on a number of challenges including removing a brick sidewalk, digging out a new bed for the new walk, installing a set of steps, planting shrubs around the yard, finishing the deck and installing lattice work around the perimeter of the house.  Our team included Julia Fairley, Lia Papathomas, Jamie Mirabella, Christina Manfredi, Don McCord, Kent Stevens, Phyllis Stevens, Graham Nelson, Mark Skinner, Gerald Helfrich and the team leaders John Ashenfelter and Steve Tompson.  The weather was wonderful with the sun breaking out just about 8AM.  We completed all of the assignments and spent some time with the owners of the house, the Mom, Debbie and her 13 year old twin boys, Derrick and Eric.  This was our initial outing with the local Habitat for Humanity organization.  We are now planning our next effort: Friday July 27 and Saturday July 28.  We will be working at one site for two days and plan a barbeque with an evening program on Friday.  We are hoping that the PCCT youth will be able to join us in the fun and schedule this activity around their summer jobs.  As always, it was an exhausting day of work but all the more rewarding when you see how appreciative the Habitat owners are with the results of the effort.
